Plastic bags are still in circulation at stores like Walmart and HEB but since January it cost you one dollar if you want plastic bags for your transaction. Despite the dollar charge people continue to use the plastic bags.

"So far we have collected a little over $144,000 in fees."

Here's a break down of the of bags sold at stores like Walmart, HEB and El Globo.
In January more than 22,000 plastic bags were sold, in February it jumped to more than 25,000...march had around more that 30,000, in April 34,000, and May 32,000 without a couple store tally's not included yet. Finance director Pete Gonzalez says the city commission will decide what to do with money.

"The money's supposed to be spent for cleaning up for the city, beautifying the city that's the attention of the ordinance."
"its amazing that amount in a half a year, i am glad they are doing that."

Since the ordinance even though some folks are still buying plastic bags many people have switched over to using the reusable bags including John Smith and Gonzalez says the city is looking cleaner.

"We have to protect our environment so I am glad the city took that step, its a nice step for all of us."

Ramiro Burinas also made the switch from plastic to reusable.

"It's a good idea to use the reusable instead of plastic for the environment so it's something positive definitely."

Oh my god! You guys act like if this is a big deal. It makes us one of the cleanest cities in Texas and also the 1st in the state and 12th in the country to do this. I believe this was a positive change. The dollar you are paying is being used for something good. The better our city looks the more businesses come and the more money their is. We are way bigger then McAllen yet MCAllen looks bigger than us cause its nice everywhere. We will soon be back where we belong.

Amen Jess all of the commissioners should be voted out Atkinson is gone, Ahumada is gone. They could have tried other things but they would rather charge us which is bs. I personally do my best not to shop in Brownsville and go to San Benito. These guys do not get it that when they put more crap on us to pay we remember during election time. Just like Gilberto Hinojosa, and Red River. The people interviewed on the news last night are old folks that buy maybe one bag but i sure does put an added

I believe that like myself, people continue to use plastic bags out of embarrassment of having to walk out of the store with the groceries in the shopping cart. I, like many others, do have recyclable bags but often are inconvenienced because I tend to forget them in the vehicle..so I find it faster just to pay the dollar and not go through the inconvenience or embarrassment. But one thing is for sure..th day I placed my Vote, I Did Not Forget.....
