Brownsville Collects $144,000 from Plastic Bag Ordinance

Plastic bags are still in circulation at stores like Walmart and HEB but since January it cost you one dollar if you want plastic bags for your transaction. Despite the dollar charge people continue to use the plastic bags.
"So far we have collected a little over $144,000 in fees."
Here's a break down of the of bags sold at stores like Walmart, HEB and El Globo.
In January more than 22,000 plastic bags were sold, in February it jumped to more than 25,000...march had around more that 30,000, in April 34,000, and May 32,000 without a couple store tally's not included yet. Finance director Pete Gonzalez says the city commission will decide what to do with money.
"The money's supposed to be spent for cleaning up for the city, beautifying the city that's the attention of the ordinance."

Since the ordinance even though some folks are still buying plastic bags many people have switched over to using the reusable bags including John Smith and Gonzalez says the city is looking cleaner.
"We have to protect our environment so I am glad the city took that step, its a nice step for all of us."
Ramiro Burinas also made the switch from plastic to reusable.
"It's a good idea to use the reusable instead of plastic for the environment so it's something positive definitely."
