The FAA has released a list of airport tower closures and Brownsville/South Padre Island airport is one of those listed.

The closure of the tower is caused by the budget sequester and there are 149 federal contract towers that will be closed by April 7th with thirteen in Texas and Brownsville being the only one in the Valley.

The move has been unexpected since the airport's traffic levels are below published FAA criteria to remain open. This does not mean the airport will close in two weeks nor does it mean the tower will shut down.

It simply means on April 7th there will be an interruption in federal funding for tower operations and personnel. The airport's Aviation Director, Larry Brown, says up to $350,000 dollars in local government will have to be diverted to keep the tower and the airport operational.
