Grand jury indicts Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on multiple charges.

(NBC News) A federal grand jury has returned a 30-count indictment against the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was charged Thursday with "Use of a Weapon of Mass Destruction Resulting in Death", "Bombing of a Place of Public Use Resulting in Death", "Malicious Destruction of Property Resulting in Death", Conspiracy and "Use of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Violent Crime" among other charges.

The indictment also says Tsarnaev left a written confession inside on the dry-docked boat that he was hiding in when he was captured by police and FBI.

Authorities say Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan, who was killed by police, used shrapnel-packed pressure cooker bombs in the bombing to maim and kill as many as possible.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says that 17 of the charges against Dzhokhar could result in life in prison or the death penalty.

The state of Massachusetts does not have a death penalty, but Tsarnaev was charged in federal court, where capital punishment is an option.
