The Border Patrol estimates it captures about six out of every ten people who try to cross into the U.S. illegally along its southern border.

That figure is from 2011, the most recent year for which numbers have been compiled. The Border Patrol concedes that these percentages are inexact estimates, but claims that 61% of would be illegal crossers are apprehended.

The report says 23% of people trying to cross illegally turn around and go back to Mexico, leaving 16% who avoid capture and successfully enter the U.S.

A bill introduced into the U.S. Senate. last week, calls for setting a goal of capturing 90% of the people attempting illegal crossings.
