The U.S. Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector is hosting an event to announce the deployment of the sector’s fifth aerostat. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014.

The aerostats already in use in RGV Sector have been an extremely effective resource in helping to apprehend human and narcotics smugglers as well as a valuable tool in locating individuals whose lives are in peril and need to be rescued. The newly deployed aerostat has the capability to fly higher than those previously deployed, therby providing coverage to a much larger area. This is the second aerostat deployed in Starr County, two others are in use in Brooks County and one in Hidalgo County.

CBP detects, identifies, monitors and responds to threats to our nation’s borders. The deployment of former DOD equipment and technology will support CBP’s ongoing efforts to leverage and maximize resources effectively and efficiently.
