EDINBURG - A drug bust in Edinburg netted three tons of marijuana by the U.S. Border Patrol agents and one of the biggest busts was near Donna.

Border agents spotted a vehicle speeding north from the Rio Grande river and when the driver saw the agents he made a U turn and began driving back south, abandoning the vehicle near the river and fleeing back into Mexico. Agents searched the vehicle and found more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana.

On Monday, agents also seized more than 1,300 pounds of marijuana near Salineno after agents approached a group of smugglers loading bundles into a pickup truck near the river. When the agents identified themselves the smugglers fled into the surrounding bushes and left behind the marijuana. The estimated total value of the seizures is at $5 million dollars.
