Nearly $20.5 million worth of marijuana was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol agents last week.

Approximately half of the marijuana was seized in multiple incidents at the Falfurrias checkpoint on U.S. Highway 281 North. Throughout the week agents at the checkpoint netted more than 13,000 pounds of marijuana.

One of the largest non-checkpoint seizures was made near Madero on March 26 by agents who were working near the Rio Grande river. They had attempted to stop a sport utility vehicle, but the driver refused to stop and sped away then abandoned the vehicle leaving 1,200 pounds of marijuana inside.

Another seizure occurred in Garceno when agents attempted to stop a Ford Expedition, at which time another vehicle pulled in front of the agents to block their path, the driver of the Expedition sped off and abandoned the vehicle leaving 1,000 pounds of marijuana inside.

Additional seizures from March 24 through March 30 pushed the total amount of marijuana seized to nearly 26,000 pounds.
