The San Juan Fire Department is investigating an early morning fire that claimed the life of a male victim.

It happened this morning at approximately 5:15 a.m. at a residence on FM 495 just east of Raul Longoria.

Authorities say the fire was called in by a police officer patroling the area who noticed the home was in flames.  San Juan fire officials arrived at the home within minutes to extinguish the blaze.

The San Juan fire chief said that they discovered the body of a deceased male in the back bedroom during their search of the home.  The fire chief believes that the man was trying to escape through a window, but metal burglary bars on the window prevented him from leaving the burning building.

The identity of the man is not released at this time, and his exact cause of death remains unknown until an official autopsy is conducted.

Investigators are trying to determine the exact cause of the fire.  The fire chief said the investigation is in the very early stages so it is unclear if any foul play is involved.
