It took more than three hours to contain the flames and as firefighters worked to put out the hot spots, the owners of the La Vista Square Mall, along with several business owners watched the fire burn their businesses down. McAllen fire officials have spoken to the owners and tenants to try figuring out what caused the fire, but they have yet to find a cause. Three stores were severely damaged but McAllen Fire Deputy Chief, René Alaniz says others were also damaged.

"Some businesses in the immediate area were affected by heat and smoke that fire released."

Plaza’s owner, Ignacio Magaña, and his property manager are now working with those store tenants whose stores were damaged to get them back open soon.

"There’s a lot of loss for us. We're working with the independent tenants to get everything cleaned up and open up as quickly as possible. Working with city to get everything protected and cleaned up and ready for business as soon as possible."

This morning's fire also caused a power outage in other buildings nearby but fire officials say power has now been restored to most of the buildings.
