Schools are starting back up in just a couple of weeks in Brownsville. With that, BISD’s summer nutrition program is coming to a close this Friday, August 15th.

The program provides free breakfast and lunch meals to any child up to age 18 at select school locations.

BISD’s Food & Nutrition Services Administrator Silverio Capistran says the child does not have to be enrolled in any school. In fact, the child does not even have to be a Brownsville resident.

The program has served over three-hundred thousand meals during the last three months.

“But we also want them to see it as a normal thing and not necessarily for children who may need that meal but open for everybody,” says Capistran.

The Food and Nutrition Service administration believes everyone should be taking advantage, "come over and have breakfast with us and lunch and save those extra dollars and use them for something that the children may need throughout the year.”

As for the coming school year, Food & Nutrition Services already have something in store.

“We believe that the community will be very pleased with our coming projects," says Capistran.

Those upcoming projects are only a few weeks away. They include the renovation of three elementary school cafeterias and the possibility of a free district-wide 'dinner' program.
