Beware Of Bears
California wildlife officials issue warning in wake of bear attack.
A late-night bear attack left a camper scratched and shaken near South Lake Tahoe, California over the weekend.
"The bear ripped open the camper's tent and scratched his back," said California Fish and Game warden Pat Foy.
The Sunday night attack is serving as a warning about the potential for bear attacks in the Sierra over the extended holiday weekend.
"These types of attacks are rare, but they do happen. People need to be aware that unsecured food and coolers are a big attraction for bears who've become accustomed to being around people," said Foy.
Foy advised anyone heading to the Sierra this weekend to make sure all trash is cleaned up and all food is secured in bear boxes to avoid a bear confrontation.
The victim, who was not identified, suffered claw scratches to his back.
