Father and son survive highway collision with 300-pound bear.

Stan Lengele was behind the wheel and his son, Zach, was in the passenger seat Wednesday afternoon when their SUV collided with a 300-pound black bear.

It happened on State Route 507 near Roy, Washington.

"It darted out from behind the car," said Lengele. "There was nothing I could do."

Lengele slammed on his breaks, and his SUV left the ground, flipping onto its top.

"I see the ground, and it feels like a roller coaster you don't want to ride," said 12-year-old Zach. "I'm just glad whoever invented seatbelts, invented seatbelts."

Other drivers rushed to free the father and son.

They escaped the crash with just scrapes and bruises.

The bear sustained serious injuries, and it was put down.

"I would rather see it put out of its misery than just laying there, letting it die slowly. It's sad," said Zach.

While Zach wished he had not had a front row seat to the sad sight, he said he is thankful.

"It's amazing that we were able to get out okay." said Zach.
