HIDALGO – Two historical buildings are turned over to the City of Hidalgo in hopes to better preserve local history.

BBVA Compass Bank gave the keys to the original Hidalgo County courthouse, jail and post office properties located off Bridge Road.

Members from the City of Hidalgo, Hidalgo County and BBVA Bank want to maintain this rare county history. As part of the agreement with BBVA Bank, the City of Hidalgo has promised to restore the buildings to their previous glory.

But paying to upkeep and rebuild old buildings can be expensive.

"Grant money is tight so we are going to do it with city funding and we are going to look to private foundations to assist with this. But, we've got a bright future ahead of us but we can't forget about the past," said John Franz, City of Hidalgo Mayor.

The Mayor hopes to have the building restored and furnished with historical items within the next eight months.
