Backup cams to be required for new 2018 vehicles
Washington (CNN) — New vehicles will soon have to come equipped with backup cameras.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ruled on Monday that backup cameras must be in all new vehicles under 10,000 pounds.
The rule takes effect on May 1, 2018. The camera has to show an area of 10 feet by 20 feet directly behind the vehicle.
The NHTSA says the technology will reduce backover crashes, which cause about 210 deaths and 15,000 injuries per year.
