Distracted father of three leaves infant in shopping cart.
Police say Kentucky father trying to load three young children and a cart full of groceries into his vehicle forgot one thing - his 6-month-old baby.
It happened around 4 p.m. at a Kroger grocery store in Nicholasville.
Officers said the child was alone for about three minutes, but is fine thanks to a couple of Good Samaritans.
They spotted the baby still in the shopping cart, still outside and brought the baby inside the store to wait for police.
"This was an unfortunate accident, but the citizens of this community did a great thing by picking up the child and immediately calling 911," Kevin Grimes, a Nicholasville Police Department officer said.
Officers said Steven Wilcox drove three blocks, figured out what he forget and called police.
He flagged down a squad car on his way back to Kroger.
"He was totally distraught about it. He realized he had made a huge mistake, as well as we realized in this situation that people do make mistakes. It was an accident and fortunately it turned out very good this time and in this situation," Grimes said.
"As a parent, you have to be aware and you always have to be with them," Janet Hodges, a mother of four and day care worker said.
Police said they will not file charges against the father.
The case has been turned over to Social Services.
