Assassination Conspiracy Has Ties to Reynosa, Mexico
McALLEN - An international plot to assassinate a foreign diplomat on U.S. soil was foiled and U.S. Attorney Eric Holder unveiled details of the conspiracy in Washington, D.C.
According to a complaint filed on Monday, an Iranian/American working with a faction of Iran's government reached out to a Mexican drug cartel to find an assassin to murder the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the U.S., Adel Al Jubeir. Investigators arrested Manssor Arbabsiar, a naturalized U.S. citizen, last month and say he's confessed. Prosecutors say there was talk of targeting the ambassador in a restaurant with a bomb.
Investigators stress the plot never reached the point where explosives were placed and that no one was in danger. Gholam Shakuri says he is an Iran based member of Iran's Quds Force, a special operations unit of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
