"Child abuse is everywhere...it's everywhere. Abuse and neglect is everywhere...and the sooner we recognize and realize and report it, the better able we are to deal with it and get those children the help that they need," said CPS spokesperson Marina Yzaguirre.

...Which is why Rio Grande Valley officials are hosting the Tenth Annual Seminar in Forensic Sciences, which specifically  focuses on the harsh realities of child abuse.

"We're helping kids learn to cope with stressful situations, helping parents learn to be more effective parents and role models for their children, helping families as a whole deal with stress," said conference director Stan Fisch.

"The best part about it is is that it's local and a lot of people from the Valley are not able to go to conferences outside of the Valley so what we are in essence doing with this conference is we're bringing professionals...professionals that they don't normally get the opportunity to talk with, to them about their experiences," said Yzaguirre.

But the conference aims to do more than just educate the public. Dr. Fisch explained that he wants attendees to make connections to their advantage while they're at the seminar:

"One of the main things we want people to take away is a lot of business cards, so that they know who to call when they have a problem, they know where to reach out for help and then, of course, we hope that they'll learn some things and broaden their view-understanding of child abuse and domestic violence," said Fisch.
