Annual Bird Population Report to be Released
Beautiful indigenous birds are part of the fun of living in the Rio Grande Valley and some local leaders are waiting on the report for the annual bird population numbers to be released. The Christmas bird count began on December 14th and ended on January 5th, but the final certification will take several more months to get the results. There are nine designated bird count areas with sites in Weslaco, Harlingen, Brownsville and South Padre Island and according to birding festival secretary Norma Friedrich those areas generate lots of money, "The birding income is $434 million dollars a year in the Rio Grande Valley." and a portion of the money goes to tourist sites and trails for bird watchers.
