BROWNSVILLE - Animal control officers with the Brownsville Animal Control Shelter are cracking down on owners who let their dogs run freely. The department has received an increased number of calls over the last few weeks regarding unleashed dogs in several neighborhoods across town. Officials say unleashed dogs are a health risk; the spread of rabies is a possibility, as well as the risk of dogs reverting to pack mentality, which leads to aggressive dogs. Officers will start an increased patrol to pick up these dogs and make contact with owners. On Thursday animal control officers handed out citations to law breaking citizens and picked up around ten dogs total. Their increase pickup efforts will run until the department sees a decrease in loose dog calls.
