American Red Cross Launches Hurricane App
RIO GRANDE VALLEY — With hurricane season well underway it's safe to be prepared for the worst. That's why American Red Cross recently launched their hurricane app for smart phones like iPhone and Android.
"It's got everything from how to plan your evacuation route, letting your family know where you're going to be, setting up an emergency kit. So, it's got all the tools needed so you're ready for hurricane season," said American Red Cross Director, Cynthia Guerra.
With location based weather alerts from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, you'll be able to track the storm. This app gives you instant access to information on what to do before, during and after. It even tells you about shelters located in our area and around the country.
"If a serious hurricane hit the area and they had locations for, you know secure locations, definitely yeah, I think that would help," said Robin Juarez from Weslaco.
It doesn't hurt to download the app because it's free and it also provides a quiz that allows you to test your knowledge to see if you are in fact ready for when a hurricane strikes.
"Do you have that hurricane emergency kit ready? it asks you what items need to be in there. How much water you need to have per person, what's the most important item you need with you in case the electricity goes out," said Guerra.
Within two weeks, the app has gained 10,000 users. It's the second app to be released in a series of life-saving apps which will help during disasters.
The Hurricane and First Aid Apps can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross.
