American flag causes car crash
Giant American flag causes crash on Boston bridge after falling on car.
A man driving across a bridge into Boston suddenly found himself unable to see when a massive American flag landed across his windshield.
He avoided hitting other cars, but his car spun out and crashed into the median.
The incident was caught on camera.
You can see the large American flag blowing in the wind over the Zakim bridge. Moments later, it breaks loose, drifting down onto a driver heading into the city.
My eyes closed, when it just hit me.
Val Demchev says he was behind the wheel.
It's a lot of ropes here, just hit me, just one piece of flag.
Demchev says he tried to control his Toyota Camry.
I just put my speed on two, very quick, right after that it's the same... I crash my car.
It happened around 10:30 in the morning. Demchev managed to avoid other drivers but he spun out and struck the median.
He ended up with scrapes on the front of his car and lost his back bumper. State police say the car is registered to his wife, Marina. The 30 by 40 foot flag had been put up by the state department of transportation before the Fourth of July. They say the rope holding it up frayed and snapped. They'll reevaluate their procedures before deciding on whether to put up another flag, something Demchev questions.
I would like don't repeat this case for anybody.
