BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — As the middle schoolers at Alton Memorial Junior High School departed for summer break on buses, they were sent off with loves of love from faculty and staff. This annual student sendoff has been a tradition at Alton Memorial Junior High for a decade now.
“I brought this tradition from another district. Uh, we – the principal and myself came the same year ten years ago, so we uh, we continued the tradition by getting the staff involved. And it just, we’re a Falcon family, and we just want to continue this so that the kids see that, you know, we’re really a family here.”
Despite the back-and-forth of sentimental hugs and waves from students and faculty, the middle schoolers seemed excited to have their summer freedom. they celebrated by cheering and throwing their school IDs out the window.
But this moment of departure had more significance for some students than others.
“This will be the last time these eighth graders ever step foot on a middle school bus as they head off for summer break and then high school.”
“We say good luck to the eighth graders because we’re not gonna see ‘em, but we tell ‘em to come visit us and to remember us and to do all the things that we taught ‘em that will make ‘em successful in life.”
“It’s just another, another way of saying goodbye to them and wishing them well at the high school and that, you know, they’ll always have a home here at Alton Memorial.”
