BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — From the outside it looks like it is a great place to get a workout and learn mixed martial arts, but the Cameron county District Attorney says that's not what was going on inside, rather it was being run as an illegal 8-liner business.
A business owner, choosing not to go on camera, works nearby and is glad it's shut down.
The business owner says the people working at the 8-liner were cautious about who went in.
"I was told you had to ring a door bell to get in, so that's more suspicion to the business."said the business owner
The District Attorney says inside there were 55 machines.
The DA's office raided the business located on Mackintosh Drive on Tuesday after getting a tip from a local business that the illegal gambling was going on.
"It was a straight 8-liner business, in fact we sighted 25 customers that were in there.”said Cameron County DA Luis Saenz.
District Attorney Luis Saenz says with 8-liners no longer in plain sight around town, more people are trying to run these places under the radar.
"It tells us that they are not going walk away from it, they are using different methods including these store fronts, homes, and hotels."said Saenz.
