HIDALGO COUNTY - Not sure what present to give this holiday season? TxDOT suggests to give a Holiday P.A.S.S.

It's a pledge to be a designated driver one night this holiday season. TxDOT is teaming up with local and state law enforcement this holiday season to send one message.

"If you are going to drink don't drive. Some of the speakers here today were talking about folks going home with drivers who have had not as much to drink as the others. And our message is, ya know what, if you have anything to drink at all, please don't drive," said Rudy Rodriguez, MADD.

In Texas, 78 people died last year because of alcohol related crashes, and several more thousand ended up injured. It's a price law enforcement officer said you don't want to pay.

"If you get caught drinking and driving, it is a $2,000 fine, 180 days of jail or both. And you got to remember, that we also have a surcharge. A surcharge of a thousand dollars for three years," said Sgt. Johnny Hernandez, DPS.

Which means, if you get a DWI, you will also have to pay $1000 every year for the next three years.

TxDOT said there are several ways to still have fun with out drinking. One solution this holiday season is to come up with a non-alcoholic drink either for yourself or your designated driver. The link below will show you 12 fun, easy to make non-alcoholic drinks.
