AEP electric company is working with some cutting edge technology that they say could save you some money in the long run.
The company will be installing Smart Meters in the Valley and statewide. These meters may look like the normal ones, but are equipped with technology that will help customers proactively control their energy use. The company will be charging a $3.15 surcharge that will be added to the customers monthly bill in the first year and then decrease to $2.86 in 2020.
The Brownsville area will be the first city to get these meters and then South Padre Island and Port Isabel will be the next cities in line. The installation will start this spring and have the meters Valley wide by 2012.
