A Better Christmas For Retailers
Shoppers plan to spend more this season, and retailers say they're ready.
A new survey shows many Americans plan to spend a little more this holiday season.
Spending was up in the first two weeks of November, and the new survey from the Consumer Federation Of America and The Credit Union National Association shows shoppers may be finding optimism amidst the holiday bargains.
In the phone survey 57 percent reported they will spend as much or more than last year.
23 percent say their financial situation is better this year.
While 38 percent do find their finances worse, that number is better than last year.
Experts have some advice for Americans still concerned about running up big debt as they run from store to store.
"Make a specific list of what you want to purchase and stick to it," says Consumer Federation of America executive director Stephen Brobeck. "Comparison shop using the internet and ads to get the best deals, and in January start paying off any related credit card debt.
The internet is expected to be big this year, while stores plan to open earlier than ever.
Some will even be open on Thanksgiving looking to cash in on shoppers feeling even the slightest bit positive about their spending.
With Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, that means one less shopping weekend than normal, so some retailers won't even wait until the traditional Black Friday to start slashing prices.
