McAllen — The city of McAllen hosted its 84th annual Fourth of July parade. Bob Canterbury is a newcomer to the event.
"I saw one of them parade floats drive by and I though ah that'd be great. Get the girls up early and come see the parade," said Canterbury.
For years the parade has not only been a part of McAllen's history, but has been an annual tradition for most families as well.
"Since i was his size...we've been coming," said one member from the Villarreal family.
The Villarreal family has made it out every Fourth of July since they can remember.
"My father used to get us ready at 6 in the morning every year to be here on time for the parade."
Whether it was their first time, or 10th...they all come for similar reasons.
"A great opportunity for us to recognize the freedoms that we have in the united states that so many others in the world don't have," said Canterbury.
"My father and my brother are a part of the US Korean War and the Army, so I'm here to support them and everybody else that has served," said parade attendee, Sandra Acevedo.
Parks and Recreation Director, Sally Gavlik says nearly 6,000 parade goers were to be expected.
"It's something that has just grown, and grown and grown," said Gavlik.
There were a total of 130 entries this year...and it's the most they've ever had.
"It symbolizes our freedom, it symbolizes the community, it symbolizes everybody working together and enjoying McAllen and all it has to offer," said Gavlik.
Everyone had their favorite act....
"The tumblers, the horses."
"The cars as well, the mustangs they were pretty...the horses. I was gonna say the dancing horses."
And they left satisfied...
I think it was good...I think it was great," said parade goers.
"Impressed with the turnout...a lot of folks," said Canterbury.
Those who were at the parade will most likely attend the city's firework show tonight to end the holiday with a bang.
"Oh absolutely, fireworks are definitely in the schedule for tonight," said Canterbury.
