25 Brownsville families are now homeowners. They are getting these homes at a very affordable rate.
There are two programs that are giving these low income homeowners a chance to live in some beautiful homes.
At the Campo Real Subdivision new home owners are thrilled to be looking at their soon-to-be brand new homes.
Alma Avelar and Mario Calderon took part in the self help housing program. With the help of the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs and the Community Development Corporation, and their own own hard work.
Families along this street buy their home for around $60,000 dollars. The homes are valued around 90,000. Under this program half the mortgage is at zero percent.
This couple along and four other families worked over ten months to build their home from the ground up.
Avelar and Calderon both work at the zoo and are engaged. They hope to get married soon and start a family in their new home.
Rosy Davila is a single mother of three. She works full time at Lowe's. She is taking part in the Colonia Model Subdivision Program. Once again through the help of the CDC and the TDHCA Davila and 20 other low income families are receiving assistance. They are buying these homes with zero interest for 30 years.
Unfortunately the Colonia Model Program was a one time deal, but the CDC is taking applications for the self help program. In order to quality a family must make under $26,000 if you are family of 4 or, $23,500 if you are a family of three. To apply you can log onto call the Community Development Corporation at 541-4955.
