20-year-old Elijah Salazar was arrested over the weekend for the murder of "Smoke Shop" owner, Ricardo Bocanegra, and the attempted murder of his wife, Jennifer. He and his wife were shot several times inside their store Monday evening. Ricardo died at the scene and Jennifer was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition after being shot multiple times in the arms and legs. But since last Monday’s shootings, she has now been upgraded to stable condition but remains hospitalized for observation.
“She’s in good spirits. We are talking on a daily basis and have contact with her.”
Because of Jennifer’s cooperation with the San Juan Police Department, investigators were able to pinpoint the suspect.
“We were able to work a photo line-up and to shot it to the victim of shooting, the lone survivor. She pointed out Mr. Salazar immediately.”
San Juan investigators obtained a warrant for Salazar’s arrest on Friday and with the help of other local law enforcement agencies, they set up surveillance teams in different locations. Around 11:30 Friday night, they saw the 20-year-old leave a house in Elsa where he hid out for days. After questioning, Salazar has told police he wasn't the only involved.
Police are following other leads and hope to make more arrests in the upcoming days.
