The solar power industry has great news for Earth Day celebrations as a new report says the use of solar panels on homes is on the rise in America, reporter Leanne Gregg has the details.

You can power nearly everything in a home from the heating system to hair dryers and all with solar energy and for many families, the sun has never looked so good. A new report by the Solar Power industry says homes generated twice as much power from rooftop solar panels in 2008. The reason, it says prices of Photovoltaic systems have fallen more than 40% in the past few years and the federal government lifted its $2,000 tax credit cap on solar panels, allowing homeowners to deduct 30% of their total costs. Close to 40 states offer subsidies in addition to the tax credit and getting the panels installed is usually in one day.

The average price of a solar electric system is between $15,000 to $20,000 dollars and the energy savings will vary depending on where you live.
