Smartphone War Heats Up

Motorola's new Droid X hits stores today, adding to the already-fierce competition among smartphone retailers.

The Droid X offers more than a few new exclusive apps its carrier, Verizon, including Blockbuster movies on demand and an NFL Mobile app that allows users to watch Sunday and Thursday night games.

The Droid X is the latest volley in the smartphone war, which is really just about catching up with Apple's iPhone.

Verizon is benefiting from the competition because it offers choice.

"The war is definitely heating up," says MSNBC.com Deputy Technology and Science Editor Wilson Rothman, "but Verizon already has three strong competitors in the smart phone business."

The debut of the latest Droid could not have come at a more opportune time, just days after Apple admitted signal problems with its iPhone Four.
