Sexting Teen Charged
17-year-old faces child porn charges after sending topless pix of herself to friends.
A Florida teen has been charged with child cruelty and possession of obscene material.
Deputies say she had pornographic pictures of herself on her cell phone and sent them to other teens.
"I think it's ridiculous the charges that I got because of something I did by myself," the teen said.
The 17-year-old is facing felony child pornography charges.
"We were provided information about a juvenile over in Cape Coral that was taking sexually explicit pictures of herself and posting them online," said John Sheehan of the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
"Nobody took pictures of me- I took them of myself," she said.
After being notified about possible child pornography on her MySpace site, detectives say they found 34 pictures showing her in sexually explicit conduct.
They reportedly found eight more on her cell phone.
"Did she do the wrong thing? Yes. She was wrong and she knew she was wrong," said Stacey Wellman, the teen's mother.
Wellman says felony charges are too stiff for this sort of a crime.
"She didn't set out to hurt anybody else, she took the pictures of herself," said Wellman.
The sheriff's office says the teen broke the law.
"Under Florida state statute, it constitutes a child pornography crime- it violates the law and it's something that we take very seriously," said Sheehan.
The teen says she learned her lesson, even though it came with felony charges.
"It could really ruin your life and you can get into a lot more trouble than you think you can," she said.
