Nebraska passes abortion bills.
Two bills have been signed into law in Nebraska that puts the state into the forefront of the abortion debate. One bill bars abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy based on assertions that fetuses' feel pain at that time. The current standard is measured when a fetus is able to survive outside the womb. The other bill requires doctors to check women to see if they have mental or physical problems after an abortion. Experts say the new bills seats a precedent for changes in federal abortion legislation.
