Drilling to Continue
Government says work on relief wells will be completed.
A permanent fix for the fractured gulf oil well is going to take a bit longer.
Engineers initially thought the recent "static kill" had filled the space between the inner piping and the outer casing of the well, but data from overnight testing was not strong enough to convince Admiral Thad Allen to cancel the planned "bottom kill" follow up.
As crews begin what should be the final stage of work on the floor of the gulf, state and local leaders in Louisiana met with Allen Friday to stress the end of the flow of oil is by no means the end of the crisis.
"BP caused this oil spill. We are going to be aggressive even after the oil is capped, we are going to be aggressive that they are accountable," said Governor Bobby Jindal.
The recovery effort along the coast is expected to last for years.
