Back To School Sales

Retailers ready their shelves as the return to the classroom approaches.

Hungry stores are gearing up for back-to-school shopping.

Discounts are plentiful as retailers refine their sales pitches.

The back-to-school shopping season is second only to holiday shopping in retail sales.

"This is going to be the first real test for consumers and their spending ability," notes the National Retail Federation's Scott Krugman.

There are conflicting views on how busy retailers will be this year compared to last year.

The National Retail Federation expects about a ten percent increase in sales, while others say it could go the other way.

Many shoppers are still waiting for sales tax holidays that start next week in at least 17 states.

That's when a lot of retailers get a glimpse of what to expect from shoppers later in the year.

"Merchandise that's selling during the back to school shopping season will most likely be hot and popular during Christmas selling season as well," Krugman explains.
