A federal judge dealt a serious blow to Arizona's tough new immigration law on Wednesday, putting most of the crackdown on hold just hours before it was to take effect.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton sets up a lengthy legal battle between Arizona and the federal government.

The ruling blocks police from having to demand proof of citizenship.

It also blocks people from having to carry their documents.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer called the ruling a "bump in the road" and vowed to take the case to the Supreme Court.

The news was a disappointment for most Arizonans, who polls show support the new law.
