Marine Held in Mexican Prison, State Department Does Nothing
MEXICO - A Mexican Official today called for the release of a former US Marine being held in a Mexican prison.
John Hammar was arrested in August for possession of a shotgun. Hammar's family says he registered the shotgun with customs on the US side of the border and was told that it would be no problem to bring it into Mexico. But hammar's family says when he tried to register the gun with Mexican customs officials he was arrested.
The US Embassy in Mexico said hammar was charged with possession of a deadly weapon. Gerardo Acevedo Danache is the Vice-President of the Matamoros chamber of commerce. He called for Hammar to be released, saying the situation was bad for tourism.
According to his attorney, Hammar faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
