Texas State Board of Education adopts new curriculum.
The Texas State Board of Education has adopted new social studies and history guidelines in a 9-5 vote for textbooks to teach political and social events. The new textbooks must mention the Conservative resurgency in the past three decades, including the National Rifle Association and the Moral Majority. There are changes in terminology such as replacing the term "slave trade" with the term "the Atlantic Triangular Trade", and changing "Imperialism" to "Expansionism.' Nearly five million students in Texas will be affected by the changes. Proponents say the changes make the textbooks more accurate, while opponents feel the changes are painting over history.
