The former Hidalgo County Precinct 1 commissioner holding a press conference Tuesday after she pleaded guilty in federal court. Monday Handy entered a guilty plea to one count of tax evasion and another count of conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens. In April of 2009 Handy was named in an indictment.
"I am, this day, tendering my resignation as Hidalgo County commissioner for precinct 1 this would include resignations as president of Hidalgo County Housing Finance Corporation, Hidalgo County Urban County Advisory Board, Secretary of Rio Grande Development Council, and Representative to the Texas Association of Regional Councils. "
Handy spent 16 years with Hidalgo County.
"It has been an honor representing you and working for you, experiences I will cherish all my life. I will make myself available to help with a smooth transition."
Now that Handy has resigned she plans to spend time with her family.
"My daughter Arielle will be graduating from high school and my son, Gabriel has started middle school. I look forward to being a full-time mother and wife. God bless you, God bless precinct 1 God bless Hidalgo County, Texas, and God Bless America!"
Her sentencing is set for June.
