The drinking water on South Padre Island may have a slight change in odor and taste, but city officials say it is safe to drink.

The Laguna Madre Water District is currently experiencing algae in the holding tanks that supply water to the island. They say algae presence is common during this time of the year because of the hot weather. The water is being treated with chemicals to help reduce the odor and the Fire Department is flushing fire hydrants to cycle out some of the water that was exposed to the algae.

I just left the Island after a brief visit. I used to spend my summers on the island, and although we always bought water from the windmills to drink, I didn't recall every drink on the island tasting funny. But this trip all the sodas and teas tasted bad. The waiters all swore it was always like this. But after finding this article I know the truth. I can also say that 5 out of the 7 people that were on the trip with me left with diarrhea. I don't think it's as safe as they say.
