Shrimp Boats Land on SPI

Tuesday, September 7, 2010 - 8:06pm

Not your typical day day on South Padre Island at Isla Blanca Park, two shrimp boats landed of the beach.

We talked with one of the shrimp captains Andreas Contreas of the BANPESCA 67 from Mexico to see what happened.

"He says my wheel broke."

The captain says they were supposed to head to the Port of Brownsville but the boat landed on the beach.

The Coast Guard says last night 66 Mexican shrimp boats made it safely to the Port of Brownsville to seek shelter from dangerous waters caused by tropical storm Hermine but Monday night these two boats and one other landed on the beach. In total 17 people were on the three boats..Only two sustained minor injuries. Most of the people on board Tuesday morning getting out and seeking safe haven but the captain's like Contreas choosing to stay aboard.

"I need to stay on because I have a lot of shrimp and I need to run the compressor to keep the shrimp frozen."

Contreas says he will stay on the boat Tuesday and hopefully the owners of the shrimp boat will tow them back out on the water.
