Brownsville city leaders celebrated Earth Day by partnering with Wal-Mart to distribute 50,000 reusable bags. Wal-Mart customers carried out their groceries in the blue bags made of recycled material instead of the usual plastic bags. Brownsville leaders say the city is the first in the state to implement an ordinance that requires all businesses to stop using plastic bags. The ordinance was passed this year and will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2011.
