HARLINGEN — Harlingen Police are investigating a double homicide.
News Center 23's Na'Tassia Finley has the latest on the investigation.
“I heard quite a few of them, in my assumption there were four to five of them (gunshots). It woke me up out of a dead sleep and then after that I continued to hear more blasts," says neighbor Diego Benitez.
Two people are dead, and one is in critical condition. It happened just after midnight at a home off of East Polk Avenue in Harlingen. Police have identified the victims as 29 year old Sarah Maxwell Montemayor and 28 year old Devan Leroy Haynes. The man in critical condition is Omar Montemayor, the estranged husband of Sarah.
Police initially responded to the 9-1-1 call thinking it was a burglary, being that the point of entry into the home was through a window.
"The caller heard noises, believed it was a break in and then heard gunshots and let us know about that," says Harlingen Police Detective Sgt. John Parrish.
Once officers arrived they found the three individuals in separate rooms of the home and determined that Montemayor shot Haynes, then his wife, and then himself. He remains in an Harlingen hospital in critical condition facing two counts of murder. Investigators say they’ll know more when they're able to speak with the alleged shooter, Omar Montemayor.
The crime scene unit did recover a shotgun and a semi automatic weapon from the residence.
The Harlingen Police Department continues to investigate this crime; if you have any pertinent information please contact Harlingen Crime Stoppers at 425-TIPS.
