Penitas Residents Evacuate from Floodwaters
The City of Penitas is next in line for a voluntary evacuation as the Rio Grande river continues to rise from water being released from Falcon Dam, Julio Olivo has more.
Residents in Penitas have been notified that the waters of the Rio Grande river have risen over the levee's and that residents may have to leave their homes. The rising waters have flooded some homes and caused those homeowners to seek shelter and leaving everything behind.
The Hidalgo County Irrigation District has been pumping water out trying to lower the levels and the border fence besides keeping out illegal activity, has also helped in holding off the water. Fortunately the drinking water for the city will not be effected since the plant are located north of the town.
The city did set up barricades on Military highway leading into La Joya, since the roadway has been covered with water and making it dangerous to drive.
