No Special Election in Precinct 1 Commissioners Seat

Inside the 93rd District Court, State District Judge Rudy Delgado made a decision to stop Hidalgo county from holding a special election to replace former Precinct 1 Commissioner Sylvia Handy in November.

The judge granted a temporary injunction on behalf of Mercedes Mayor Joel Quintanilla, who filed the lawsuit to stop the election from happening, District Attorney Rene Guerra was unhappy with the ruling and did state that he won't stop there and will appeal the decision. Mayor Quintanilla says he did all his due diligence and because of his hard work, deserves to be the Democratic nominee for the seat.

There is no one running against Mayor Quintanilla for the commissioner's seat which would make him the nominee to replace Handy. Current Precinct 1 Commissioner A.C. Cuellar's name would have been on the voting ballot, but he no longer be able to run as a Democrat, but would run for the seat as a write-in candidate.
