Tragedy struck very early this morning outside a home on Del Valle Avenue in San Benito. County officials were called out to this home sometime after six this morning. When investigators arrived, they found 35-year-old, Roberto Calderon, lying in the backyard with a gunshot wound to the chest and 43-year-old, Leticia Jimenez Trejo, inside a car with a gunshot wound to the neck. The couple was dead.

"Como a las cuatro de la manana los perros estaban ladrando y se aventaban sobre la cerca."

Olga Esquivel lives right next door and has known the Calderon family for more than 10 years. She tells us she woke up to the sounds of her dogs barking and trying to jump the fence. This was around four in the morning. She says she heard voices next door but didn't pay much attention since her neighbors hang out outside often, so she went back to sleep. When she woke up about two hours later, she was shocked to hear the news.

"Yo ni tan siquiera me hubiera podido imaginar que el tuviera una pistola."

Sheriff Omar Lucio says Calderon left a note apologizing for what he had done. That letter was found next to his body. The gun he used to kill his girlfriend and himself was also found next to him.

“He was a really good guy you know. You’d be outside cutting your yard or he'd be outside cutting the yard or washing his car. He’d wave at you hello how's it going, like that."

Investigators are still trying to determine why Calderon killed his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself.
