On Saturday, October 20, Brownsville Community Health Center (BCHC) will present the family celebration ¡Vive tu vida! Get Up! Get Moving! Brownsville to
promote family health and wellness for people of all ages and sizes. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Dean Porter Park.
This exciting event is expected to attract thousands and will feature health screenings and family fun activities including kids play areas, sports clinics, dance lessons, music, and drawings for prizes such as X Box 360, bicycles, ping pong tables and exercise equipment.
The event is sponsored by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (the Alliance) and the Health Foundation for the Americas. “Making movement a daily part of your life is one of the most important steps you can take for you and your family’s health,” said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the Alliance.
Along with BCHC, the Brownsville Independent School District and the City of Brownsville are local presenting sponsors. “We joined forces with the school district on this event to ensure families will attend and obtain resources to improve their health. To this end, we created a competition between the schools. The three BISD schools that turn out the most participants will win a cash prize to use for wellness programs in their schools,” says Cristela Gomez, BCHC’s Special Projects Coordinator.
According to BCHC’s Executive Director, Paula S. Gómez, “¡Vive
tu Vida! Get Up! Get Moving! reminds us that people of all ages and sizes can make physical activity a part of their daily lives — and have fun doing it! Dance, learn a new activity, or walk with family or friends. There are many great ways to get up and get moving for your health!”
Last year's event drew more than 5000 participants and Brownsville is one of only 10 cities that were selected by the Alliance to host this event. Other ¡Vive tu vida! Get Up! Get Moving! signature events include family fun walks, dance events, community festivals, and partnerships with sports teams and athletes to promote family physical activity. The family-oriented events are being organized by ten leading Hispanic community-based organizations and are tailored to the interests and cultures of their community.
Other events this year are being held in Albuquerque, NM; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Las Vegas, NV; Hayward, CA; New York, NY; and San Diego, CA.
