Driscoll Children's Specialty Clinic Prepares for Christmas in July
BROWNSVILLE — Santa will be making an early appearance here in Brownsville in about a week from today.
News Center 23's Na’Tassia Finley has more on Driscoll Children's Specialty Center's Christmas in July event and how you can help.
This month volunteers at the clinic are getting ready for their big fundraiser, one that brings out the community and a number of businesses throughout Brownsville.
The event's goal is to bring in as many toys as possible. Those toys will be handed out at a special Christmas party in December to the thousands of children the clinic serves each year.
“They enjoy coming in here. We have a party for them choose a toy of their choice for them and their sibling as well, it just kind of brings out what Christmas is all about," says event coordinator, Nora Garcia.
The toys collected at the Christmas in July fundraiser are also given to children throughout the year when they receive treatment.
As of now the shelves where the Christmas in July toys are stored are running low, but organizers say next week's event will no doubt have these shelves overflowing with toys and gifts for the patients. Garcia says in the previous five years the event has been held the community has always been very generous when it comes to giving.
"But we kind of fall short for the baby section, sometimes we have newborns and we can give them blankets and rattles...but we also have teenagers, 13 and above that don't want to choose a kid toy, so maybe a gift card," says Garcia.
If you'd like to join in on the Christmas in July fun, you can bring a new, unwrapped toy or gift to the event; it's next Thursday, July 19th from 6 to 8 pm at the Driscoll Children’s Specialty center at 5500 N. Expressway. There will be food and entertainment for the whole family.
"We have Home Depot and Lowes that do woodwork with them. They entertain the kids while the parents go do the auctions and raffles. We also have the Gladys Porter Zoo here, so if you like snakes, come on over, the kids love those things. And Best Buy is doing some dance offs as well and they're actually going to take pictures of the families," says Garcia.
Organizers add they want to make sure children who are receiving treatment over the holidays have something special to look forward to.
