It's hard to even imagine right now given that it's still so hot here in the Rio Grande Valley, but it will eventually cool down and we'll need to bring out the winter gear.

Due to the financial status of many families living in the RGV even the most basic necessities are often hard to come by.

"Every year a big percentage of Brownsville area children go without the appropriate winter clothing. It's amazing how a lot of times we don't know what type of poverty is out there," says Tip of Texas Case Worker, Nelda DeLeon.

Tip of Texas Family Outreach is a non-profit organization that offers free parenting classes and services to families here in Brownsville. They're now collecting gently used coats, sweaters, mittens, scarves and any other type of winter gear to keep our little ones warm this winter.

"Due to our weather being unpredictable its good we start our coat drive cause we don't know when we'll get a cold front or what to expect so it's best we start collecting now and start distributing," says DeLeon.

She adds they need all sizes in winter wear, but often fall short when it comes to infant and teen sizes.

Tip of Texas Family Outreach will be collecting and handing out winter wear throughout the season. You can visit them at 455 East Levee or give them a call at 541-5566 if you're interested in donating or picking up a coat.
